UPS Int'l Customer Experience Data Scientist in Atlanta, Georgia

Job Summary

This position implements advanced analytics models and solutions to yield predictive and prescriptive insights from large volumes of structured and unstructured data collected via UPS Customer listening tools and technology (Qualtrics). The incumbent works with a team that is responsible for researching and implementing advanced analytics models utilizing a diverse set of techniques. This role follows advanced analytics best practices to build and execute analytical models to solve business problems. This position provides input to department and project teams on decisions supporting projects.


  • Develops data design based on exploratory data analysis to meet stated business needs

  • Defines key data sources from UPS and external sources to deliver models

  • Writes code to collect and manipulate data from multiple data sources

  • Works with team to select and implement model development process from statistics and machine learning to answer business problems

  • Defines model KPI expectations and validation, testing, and re-training of existing models to meet business objectives

  • Reviews and creates repeatable solutions through written project documentation, process flowcharts, logs, and commented clean code to produce datasets that can be used in analytics and predictive modeling

  • Synthesizes insights and documents findings through clear/concise presentations and reports to inform stakeholders

  • Works with team to present operationalized analytic findings and provide recommendations

  • Develops data features that will serve as inputs to Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning techniques to meet stated business requirements

  • Explores data to determine correlation of data to domain classification or regression problem

  • Develops procedures to monitor model and production system performance/integrity

  • Supports analysis and integration of tools/methods to provide desired results from models and requirements.

  • Helps to identify opportunities to move from predictive to prescriptive analytics to more quickly turn data into results that support data-driven decisions

  • Follows best practices to store source code in UPS repositories

  • Works with team using agile processes to develop models

  • Leverages analytics and visualization tools to design and present information to drive fact-based decision making

  • Demonstrates visualization techniques and supports training to encourage adoption of visualization tools

  • Creates impactful visualizations for internal publication to facilitate communication

  • Reviews visualizations for data accuracy and integrity to meet business standards

  • Develops analytical reports and represents large, complex sets of data and associated solutions to support business objectives

  • Determines documentation needs to deliver models

  • Organizes the production and distribution of documentation to facilitate communications

  • Reviews system documentation to ensure accuracy and consistency when changes are made

  • Leads technical documentation in compliance with UPS Software Development Lifecycle to communicate and update project teams and stakeholders


  • Identifies current/future needs of the customer or business; understands how business needs dictate the project’s requirements, project direction, business objectives, and resource allocation; makes recommendations on the solutions-design phase of the project

  • Uses the research problem to guide relevant data gathering and benchmarking; develops a working knowledge of literature related to the research problem; minimizes personal biases that may impact the research process or outcomes; gathers data that represent all sides of the business case

  • Demonstrates an understanding of business requirements or critical elements of a problem; identifies the impact of a problem on multiple areas of the business; recommends improvements to existing processes or programs

  • Participates in evaluation of emerging industry technologies; understands technologies impact on current IT architectures and infrastructures

  • Captures and disseminates technical and business information; facilitates the business change decision-making processes and the planning and implementation of change

  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic project planning processes, including planning action items and resources

  • Identifies and evaluates risks; determines and applies risk treatments

  • Demonstrates some advanced knowledge of statistical analyses, sampling, tests, ability to identify outliers in data sets; troubleshoots existing statistical models; knowledge of time series analysis

  • Conducts root cause analysis and diagnoses and manages technical problems using pre-defined steps, limited experience, and available tools

  • Identifies and documents changes that need to be made to established procedures. Makes recommendations and resolves moderately complex technical problems

  • Contributes to the identification of inefficiencies and deficiencies in processes and applications during walk through, tests, and actual execution

  • Proposes improvements to processes and applications and executes the agreed upon changes designed to improve processes and applications

  • Recognizes the basic impact of technology on UPS business, services, and processes; identifies technological barriers in achieving desired objectives; maintains appropriate breadth and depth of technological knowledge for current work assignment

  • Master’s Degree (or internationally comparable degree) in Analytics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science or related field
