UPS R&D Mechanical Engineer in Atlanta, Georgia
Job Summary
This position supports Advanced Technology Group (ATG) research activities by providing ideation, mechanical design, and prototyping services to multiple projects. The applicant should be highly proficient with both analytical design and physical fabrication techniques across mechanical and mechatronics engineering. This role will be responsible for independently managing design programs, including guiding the work of junior engineers on these projects; planning and reporting for design programs; and will be expected to take a principal role in the management and operation of the ATG Rapid Prototyping Laboratory.
This position performs research and develops tools/systems to support robotics and automation for UPS. The applicant collaborates with other R&D Engineers, Research Scientists, and business units, ensuring a seamless transition of tools and systems to internal business units and external vendors. This role applies knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures from specialized engineering disciplines. The incumbent identifies and implements technologies/processes to improve the efficiency, reliability and availability of the UPS environment. This position contributes to the maintenance, testing, and deployment of products.
Responsibilities
Provides ideation, mechanical design, and prototyping services to support multiple projects within UPS ATG
Serves as design lead for assigned projects, and manages relationships with internal customers
Leads activities around operation, maintenance, and user programming development for ATG Rapid Prototyping Lab
Manages work planning and progress reporting for assigned projects
Guides junior engineering staff in support of project work
Preferences
Extensive, demonstrable, hands-on electromechanical prototyping experience
Demonstrates advanced proficiency with basic machine shop tools (mill, lathe, 3D printer, hand & power tools)
Possesses basic electronics prototyping and debugging, basic hardware/software interfacing (via DAQ/Arduino/RPi/etc)
Experienced CAD user - Onshape or Solidworks; displays comfort with designing multi-part assemblies, generating low-volume production-ready drawings, working in PDM/other design data management environment
Demonstrates specific prototyping equipment experience: welding, waterjet, sheet metal fabrication, CNC milling + toolpathing
Experience in administering PDM/design data management environments
Experience with DFM for weldment structures at mid-volume (5-50k units/year)
Embedded systems design experience
Experience with machine vision or other imaging technologies
