Job Description

The role of the Sales, Use & Excise Tax Manager is to oversee all aspects of the sales, use and excise tax processes for UPS businesses in the US. This includes managing and overseeing tax compliance, audits, research and planning for all entities under the Tax Department's management.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • The manager will be responsible for working with outsourced service providers to manage and resolve complex tax compliance and audit issues, as well as recommending and preparing audit reserves.

  • Review and approve tax returns and funding.

  • Review and approve final audit work papers and assessments.

  • Close collaboration with Finance and Accounting, Global Accounting Center, and Global Business Services on tax and accounting issues that impact the company's financials. The manager will also have oversight of transaction tax project implementation and data requirements, such as tax engine and accounting system upgrades, and voluntary disclosures.

  • Collaborate and advise operational leaders such as Buildings & Systems Engineering (BaSE), Automotive and Transportation Department on the sales tax implications on projects and transactions.

  • Review sales tax language on vendor and supplier contracts for proper sales and use tax determination and guide tax-saving opportunities when available.

  • Conduct comprehensive tax research and analysis on various sales/use tax issues to ensure proper tax treatment of transactions.

  • The position will provide greatest scrutiny to tax returns and audits to IFTA returns and audits, NYHUT returns and audits, Oregon Weight Distance tax and audits, and the CTHUF return and audits.
