UPS Compensation & Benefits Specialist in Miami, Florida

Job Summary

The Compensation & Benefits Specialist assists in monitoring UPS’s benefits and compensation programs. He/She helps ensure the company’s package(s) are competitive within the industry, meet employees’ needs, and are cost effective. This position evaluates positions to ensure salary levels are appropriate, exempt or non-exempt status is applied correctly, and job descriptions and classifications are accurate. He/She collaborates with relevant managers to define new positions and determine appropriate compensation. The Compensation and Benefits specialist analyzes compensation and benefits trends and helps oversee the following benefits programs: insurance and leave policies, retirement plans, and company wellness programs.

This position receives cross-departmental ad hoc requests (e.g., age, census, etc.) to resolve incoming salary inquiries from managers. He/She writes complex queries utilizing various mathematical calculations and multiple nested IIP (i.e., Microsoft Access Queries) statements to derive results. The Compensation & Benefits Specialist writes programs to return data elements from database records and produce compensation-related reports. He/She designs the layout of ad hoc reports to modify various updated compensation-related data. This position assists with Merit Increase System (MTC) testing to ensure annual updates are performed accurately.

Other Duties

  • Handles logistics of Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ) meetings to draft documents for review.

  • Assists with the implementation of corporate-wide Compensation policies and practices to ensure availability of equitable and competitive programs.

  • Maintains awareness of market trends, legislative trends, social and mandatory benefits available to employees in each country, and makes recommendations based on these factors.

  • Assists with quarterly reviews with each country on benefits plan claims experience(s), costs, loss ratios, service and quality issues, etc.

  • Holds vendors, brokers, and providers accountable to meet process and performance expectations.

  • Conducts regular cost analysis and audit processes and procedures (e.g., Dependent Verification Process) to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

  • Works with Corporate Benefits department counterparts on benefits items associated with Miami and Puerto Rico-based employees covered by plans designed and overseen by the corporate department.

  • Participates in salary surveys and analyzes data to determine internal and external competitiveness, both internally and externally.

  • Benefits, Retirement, and/or Healthcare Knowledge: Demonstrates basic knowledge of the elements and characteristics of current benefits programs.

  • Detail Orientation: Captures/documents specific and accurate information; learns subjects thoroughly and in detail; completes work with thoroughness; supplies appropriate details when requested; maintains organized files.

  • Report Generation: Possesses ability to generate simple reports using basic functions in software, and/or writing basic queries; identifies information required to complete reports and identifies existing reports generated by others.

  • Technology Knowledge: Demonstrates a general understanding of technology used by the company; communicates basic technological concepts and terminology; applies standard technology in daily work.


  • Bachelor’s Degree (or internationally comparable degree) – Preferred

  • Experience with vendor relationship management – Preferred

  • Experience demonstrating facilitation/public speaking skills – Preferred

  • Experience with performing benefits market data analysis – Preferred
