UPS Plant Engineering Facilities Engineer in Norwood, Massachusetts

Are you looking to expand your career horizons? UPS is seeking a Facilities Engineer to oversee the day-to-day activities of the Plant Engineering (PE) function. He/she ensures PE provides cost-effective, timely and professional project engineering services to adhere to project management procedures.

The Facilities Engineer manages facility maintenance and housekeeping operations, facility legal and regulatory compliance, environmental, labor and employee relations activities and ensures the continuous development of his/her workgroup. He/she also oversees existing facility and equipment safety programs and monitors federal and state-driven regulation changes.

In addition to managing the design certification and deployment of real-time applications and hardware for facility technology solutions, the Facilities Engineer also provides technical support between PE and Information Services. He/she manages and analyzes, data, strategies and performance for Corporate Sustainability and develops internal and external sustainability messaging to addresses inquiries.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Works cross-functionally to identify and implement alternative processes that improve efficiency

  • Solicits and selects outside resources for facility maintenance and housekeeping operations, projects, consulting, environmental and other needs

  • Conducts audits in corporate, region and district facilities to ensure compliance with UPS, U.S. domestic, foreign national and international HAZMAT transportation regulations (e.g., Department of Transportation [DOT], etc.)

  • Manages assessment and remediation projects for underground storage tanks and other releases and spills

  • Manages all aspects of procurement and installation of material handling equipment used in package sortation and the development of electrical bid packages/specifications

  • Coordinates construction and conveyor systems projects; investigates mechanical breakdowns (e.g., conveyor system failure, operator error, system design issues, etc.) to prevent productivity and efficiency deficiencies

  • Oversees the development, quality and implementation of training courses and materials (i.e., instructor-led or Computer Based Training [CBT]); conducts training using presentations, hands-on demonstrations, curriculum guides and testing materials

  • Ensures operational improvements and/or equipment repairs are carried out to improve efficiency of package flow and safety

Knowledge and Skills

  • Applies working knowledge of physical asset management and allocation, including financial and operational impact; calculates value or depreciation of standard physical assets; identifies issues

  • Develops plans that balance details and big picture; completes work with thoroughness; maintains organized records; audits for inconsistencies; maintains documentation that supports details, decisions and completion of work

  • Develops procedures for preventative maintenance of equipment; describes impact of poorly performing equipment on safety and operations

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of building or plant design; determines root cause of recurrent failures; evaluates proposed designs to ensure full equipment integration within facilities

  • Applies established procedures for responding to incidents; documents information pertinent to incidents; communicates resolutions/results

  • Develops project management plans and leads implementations; supports initiatives with well-defined project needs and cross-functional roles/responsibilities throughout project lifecycle; manages resistance to cross-functional project demands; employs project management tools and technology (e.g., Microsoft Project, Program Management Group website, etc.)

  • Demonstrates understanding of UPS and vendor business needs and goals; reviews and recommends appropriate vendors; provides input into creation of vendor contracts or agreements; communicates expectations to vendors

  • Experience identifying internal customer needs

  • Experience with vendor management

  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar drafting programs

  • Experience managing and monitoring facility legal and regulatory/environmental compliance

  • Experience managing facility maintenance and housekeeping operations

  • Experience developing and managing budgets or creating department financial plans

  • Experience managing projects that adhere to Real Estate and Facilities Committee (REFCO) procedures

  • Experience facilitating process improvements (e.g., conveyor system failure, operator error, system design issues, etc.)

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or internationally comparable degree) in Engineering - Preferred
